Counselling may help you to resolve problems, think afresh about your difficulties, make decisions, cope with crises, develop personal insight, work through difficult feelings or improve relationships with others, resolve or transform conflicts with support of a professional counsellor. Counselling is a service that no one should feel ashamed or embarrassed when accessing. Utilizing counselling service does not mean you are weak or unable to do things by your own, it gives you extra support.
The United Nations Staff Counselling and Wellbeing Unit in Yemen, under administrative and technical support of UNDSS/CISMU, offers professional therapeutic counselling services to all members of staff of all UN Agencies in the country and their dependents regardless of grade and contract type.
How can I be sure that my privacy will be maintained?
Staff counselling services are provided on one–to–one basis, face–to–face format and over the phone. The counsellor will not inform a third party of any details related to your attendance at the counselling service. Maintaining confidentiality is an integral part of counselling and an ethical obligation. Consent to disclose any information is sought from staff member if this becomes necessary. The oath of confidentiality is breached if and when it is believed that someone is at serious risk or when it is required by law.
Who provides Staff Counselling Services?
Staff counselling service at the United Nations in Yemen is offered by a qualified professional counselling psychologist, a psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist. The service aims at providing staff members with an opportunity to access professional therapeutic counselling service, so that they may better explore and develop their potentials and fulfil their personal and work related goals, thus in so doing improve their personal lives and work productivity.

- Critical incident stress management (crisis intervention to individuals, groups and families)
- Work place stress management
- Psychosocial assessments
- Psychosocial support services (in chronic illness and debilitating conditions, separation from UN – workforce etc.)
- Counselling (individuals, families and groups)
- Consultation (staff members, supervisors, administration, dependents)
- Follow up care (post hospitalization or ongoing specialized treatment etc.)
- Referral to external service providers such as; counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists and, to other resources available both internally and externally such as detox and rehab services, and legal etc.
- Hospital visits / home visits
- Promotion of welfare activities
- Trainings, psych education (see calendar of our events)
- Interpersonal conflict resolution and mediation
How are the counselling sessions scheduled?
Counselling sessions are scheduled according to your preference at the time of booking, and bookings are done on first come first served basis. However if you are in a crisis you may request for the nearest counselling slot available.
A counselling session takes about 45 minutes to 1 hour or sometimes less. The UN staffs’ counselling service aims to offer appropriate help as quickly and as conveniently as possible.
